Understanding adenomyosis

Understanding painful or heavy periods and the care that may help.

Endometriosis and adenomyosis: what is the difference?

What is adenomyosis?

Uterine lining tissue grows within the muscle of the uterus. It differs from endometriosis, which occurs outside the uterus.

Symptoms and assessment

Heavy or painful periods and pelvic pain are possible. Assessment may include examination, ultrasound or MRI.

Care options

Pain or bleeding medicines and hormonal treatments may help. Surgery is considered individually, including your pregnancy plans.

When to seek help

Seek assessment when periods affect your life, and urgent care for severe or worsening pain despite pain relief.

A common question

Discuss your needs before choosing treatment.

Is it the same as endometriosis?

No. The tissue location differs, although symptoms can overlap.
